What you carry on a train is not left to judgement. ENR distinguishes three quite different situations: ordinary passenger luggage, parcels with their own regulation and charges, and baggage storage as a station service.
The dividing line: the parcels regulation
The key provision is precisely worded: carrying heavy loads that disturb or harm other passengers and to which the parcels regulation does not apply is a violation.
Note the final condition. The violation is not the size of the load itself but the fact that it falls outside the parcels regulation. ENR does not prohibit moving large items; it channels them into the correct system — parcels, with its own rules and charges.
So the practical question before travelling with a large load is whether it counts as a parcel needing separate handling.
Postal parcels
The system includes a standalone financial item for postal parcel pricing — moving parcels across the network is an officially priced service, not an informal arrangement.
There is also a freight difference ticket item, showing a full accounting framework around freight alongside passenger transport.
Baggage storage at the station
A service many do not know about: the system defines baggage storage fees. Leaving bags at a station for a period is an approved, priced service — useful for long waits between connections.
Availability varies by station, so asking locally is the right route.
Pets
Here the position is direct: transporting pets on trains is a violation provision in the regulations, grouped with conduct violations.
Because it is worded this way, it is not a matter of staff discretion as a general rule. Anyone who must move an animal should ask in advance about the correct procedure rather than risk it on the day.
Strictly prohibited: flammable materials
Carrying any flammable materials is a standalone violation — a safety provision with no room for discretion, for obvious reasons in an enclosed space carrying hundreds of people.
Lost property
If you lose something, the system includes an item for lost property certificates — there is a documented official process, not just a verbal enquiry. Applications go through the station.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a maximum luggage weight?
The regulation refers to loads that disturb passengers and fall outside the parcels regulation, without publishing a unified figure. Parcel regulation detail is available at the station.
Can I bring a cat or dog?
Transporting pets is listed as a violation, so asking in advance about the correct procedure is essential.
Can I leave my bag at the station?
A baggage storage fee item exists; availability varies by station.
What if I leave something on the train?
There is an official lost property certificate process, submitted via the station.
Note
We list the regulation provisions without amounts or specific weights, since these are set administratively and not published uniformly. For the full violations list see our violations and fines guide, and browse Egypt railway stations.
