Can't Find Today's Train in Booking? When Inquiry Opens and Closes

A train departures board at an Egyptian station

A frequent question: why can I not find today's train in search results when it has not departed yet? The answer is not a website fault but a rule in the booking system — and its effect depends on the inquiry channel.

The upper limit: fifteen days

Booking on Egyptian National Railways is available up to fifteen days ahead. Any inquiry for a later date returns nothing; this is a fixed limit.

In practice, a trip a month away cannot be locked in — the only option is waiting until it enters the window.

The lower limit: where the confusion lies

The system does not treat all inquiry channels alike, and the gap is significant:

  • Online inquiry stops returning a train roughly twelve hours before its departure.
  • Station inquiry keeps returning it until minutes before departure.

This explains a familiar experience: tonight's train is on the station board but absent from online search.

A measured comparison

In a measurement taken after 6pm on the Cairo–Alexandria line: online inquiry returned zero services for the same day, while station inquiry returned ten, the nearest departing in eighteen minutes with over three hundred seats available.

For the following day, the earliest departure returned online was 7am, while the 4am, 5am and 6am services — which run daily — were excluded entirely because they fell inside the twelve-hour window.

A departed train: an important detail

Once a train has left a station it no longer appears in inquiries from that station. But it remains visible from stations it has not yet reached.

This is genuinely useful: a passenger who boarded with a standing ticket from Cairo to Tanta after the train departed cannot query Cairo–Tanta, but can query Benha–Tanta to see whether a seat has freed up for the remaining leg.

In a real measurement, a train that had left Cairo twenty-four minutes earlier still returned available seats when queried from Benha, Tanta and Damanhour.

Composition changes daily

A related note: the number of coaches and their numbers are not fixed. The same train may run with six coaches one day and seven the next — normal operation, not a data error.
