Student rail discounts in Egypt are well known, but few realise ENR does not treat "student" as a single category. The system defines four separate student categories, and the distinction is not cosmetic — each is tied to a named educational authority.
The four categories
- School student — under the Ministry of Education.
- University student — under the Ministry of Higher Education.
- Al-Azhar school student — under Al-Azhar school education.
- Al-Azhar university student — under Al-Azhar university education.
Al-Azhar education existing as a separate track at both levels means an Al-Azhar student is not classified under general education — an important point when preparing documents.
A discounted ticket is not a subscription
- Student profile on a ticket — a discount on a single journey.
- Student subscription — a recurring travel permit with the four categories above and separate subscription fees.
A student commuting daily between home and university needs the subscription; someone travelling once or twice a month may be fine with the discounted ticket.
Children of ENR staff
A completely separate classification: children of ENR employees, split by whether the parent holds a gold or silver medal. There is also a dedicated student category for children of ENR staff.

Because each category is tied to a named authority, proof of student status from the correct body is the basis of the whole process. The exact documents are determined by the station subscriptions office.
